AB-900 Exam Guide: Passing Microsoft Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals

I recently took the AB-900 Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals exam, and I’m excited to share that I’ve passed! You can verify my certification on my Microsoft Learn profile.

When I sat the exam on January 26, 2026, it was still in beta, but as of January 28, 2026, it’s now available for everyone. One thing to note about beta exams: you don’t receive results immediately. Instead, you wait until the exam exits beta, which can take up to 8 weeks. It’s worth the patience though—getting certified early on a new exam lets you stay ahead of the curve.

Preparing for the AB-900 Exam

As with any Microsoft certification, I recommend starting with the exam’s skills outline and completing the relevant Microsoft Learn modules. However, for AB-900, I’d strongly encourage going beyond just the modules. Hands-on experience with products like Microsoft Defender XDR, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Copilot is invaluable, as these feature heavily throughout the exam.

If you need your own tenant for practice, check out my previous post: “Power Platform for Developers: Setting Up Your Own Azure Tenant and Power Apps Environment”. Note, if you work for an enterprise, you may qualify for a Microsoft E5 Developer Tenant for free!

I also found this YouTube video by John Savill incredibly helpful for exam preparation. Additionally, since this is an AI-focused certification, I used AI itself as a study tool—asking it to generate sets of 20 practice questions at a time related to the exam topics. This approach helped me identify knowledge gaps and reinforce key concepts. Please feel free to get in touch if you want to know the prompts I used!

What I Learned Along the Way

One unexpected benefit of preparing for this exam was how it enhanced my understanding of Microsoft’s AI principles and the interconnected nature of the Microsoft ecosystem. You begin to see how Defender XDR, Purview, Copilot, and other tools work together as part of a cohesive security and productivity framework—something that’s not always obvious when working with these products in isolation.

The Exam Experience

Due to the NDA all exam takers sign, I can’t reveal specific questions, but I can share some observations. I found this exam harder than the modules suggested it would be, and there were more questions than I anticipated. The exam is 60 minutes long and includes a mix of straightforward and challenging questions—some requiring multiple reads to fully understand what’s being asked.

This difficulty didn’t discourage me; it simply meant I needed to pay extra attention before submitting my answers. If you’ve read my previous post about passing the PL-900 exam, my advice remains consistent:

  • Take your time with each question

  • Read the question carefully—then read it again

  • Use the ‘review’ feature to flag questions you want to revisit

  • If you’re unsure, use process of elimination and make your best guess

Looking Ahead

Passing AB-900 is just the beginning of my journey with Microsoft Agents and Copilot. I’m excited to continue exploring these tools, building more agents, and finding practical ways to incorporate them into real-world scenarios—both for my own workflow and to share insights here on Platform Pulse Solutions.

If you’re considering taking the AB-900 exam or have already completed it, I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments below!
